What is the age requirement to obtain a Connecticut learner’s permit?
An age requirement of sixteen years old is required, as is the passing of vision and knowledge tests.
Who can obtain a learner’s permit?
A Connecticut learner's permit may be issued to anybody who meets the state's health and fitness requirements, is at least 16 years old, and passes the knowledge and vision test.
Can undocumented immigrants apply for a Connecticut driver's license?
A Connecticut driver's license may be obtained by illegal immigrants who have the proper documentation. Foreign birth certificates, driver's licenses with current photos, consular cards, and evidence of continuous residency in the state are all acceptable forms of identification for applicants.
How does the vision test work?
The visual acuity and peripheral vision are tested during the vision assessment. If you use glasses or contact lenses, your vision must be at least 20/40.
I am a first time driver. Do I need a learner’s permit?
There is a learner's permit requirement regardless of your age, and you must carry it at all times when operating a vehicle. Additionally, you must complete an 8-hour course on safe driving practices at a Connecticut commercial driving school.
I had a Connecticut driver’s license in the past / I currently hold a valid out-of-state license. Do I have to take an 8-hour Safe Driving Practices course?

To pass, you must have a total of 20 correct answers.
How do I know when I am ready to take the practice test?

I failed my knowledge test. What do I have to do?
To retake the practice exam, you must wait a total of 14 days between attempts. In addition, a new testing price must be paid.

I have a learner’s permit. Do I have to complete a driver training program in order to obtain a Connecticut driver’s license?
You're correct in saying that all candidates for a driving license under the age of 17 are required to pass an eight-hour driving course and a commercial driver's license training program at an accredited school or a secondary school program or a home training program (including 2-hour parent training). Before they may take their road test, all 18-year-old candidates must have a learner's permit for at least 90 days and complete an 8-hour course on safe driving practices and provide a certificate proving they did so..
How long is a Connecticut learner’s permit valid for?
After two years, or until you receive a driver's license, it expires.
I have a learner’s permit. Do I have any restrictions?
You can only have a qualified driving teacher or a person who has had a valid driver's license for at least four years and is at least 20 years old as a passenger.
What happens if I do not respect the restrictions?

I am the parent of a 16/17-year-old who obtained a learner’s permit. What do I have to do?
A commercial driving school or secondary school must provide you and your adolescent with two hours of education on the rules that apply to drivers under the age of 18 as well as the risks of teen driving. The eight-hour Safe Driving Practices course includes this course.
Can I complete my driver training program at home?
Yes, you are required to undergo training under the supervision of an instructor who is at least 20 years old and has had a license for at least four years previous to the start of instruction.
Who can be the instructor for the Home Training Program?
An adult who is a parent, a guardian, or a close family member may provide home training for their child. It is required that, while taking the road test, the applicant provide proof that they have completed 30 hours of course work, including an 8-hour Safe Driving Practices program in a Connecticut commercial driving or secondary school, and that the home instructor has signed the statement.

I am 16-17 years old and I received my Connecticut Driver’s license. Do I have any restrictions?
Yes:
A qualified driving teacher, a parent or legal guardian, or someone who is at least 20 years old and has a valid driver's license may be your only passengers during the first six months of driving.
It's okay to drive alone or with close family members for the next six months. After midnight and before 5am, you're also not permitted to drive on the roads of the city of Los Angeles.
