Idaho Permit Test FAQs:

How do I get driver’s permit in Idaho?

If your driver’s license has been expired for more than a year, or it’s your first license, you must apply for a learner’s permit, or Supervised Instruction Permit, in Idaho. This requires a written exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.

Once you get this valid permit, you must then pass a vision test as well as a road skills test in order to obtain an Idaho driver’s license. If you are under 17 years of age, you must hold a learner’s permit for at least 6 months and complete a state approved driver training program. Before taking the road skills test, you must also show a certificate of completion of 50 hours of supervised driving time.

How do I prepare for the Idaho permit test?

It is a requirement of the DMV in Idaho that all applicants pass a written exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws. You are encouraged to study for this exam so that you can obtain your learner’s permit as soon as you reach the required age. You can take an online practice exam that provides actual sample questions from the DMV exam. Test your driving knowledge by taking the Idaho practice permit test now.

If you don’t pass the exam, you may be charged a fee to rewrite the test and you may have to wait at least until the next day to retake it.

I have recently moved to Idaho. How do I get the driver’s license?

If you are a new resident in Idaho, and you have an out-of-state license, you must get an Idaho driver’s license within 90 days of moving to the state. You must obtain a license within 30 days if you have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You will be required to surrender your out-of-state license in order to get the new one, so be sure that you bring it with you to the DMV.

You will need to pass the vision screening test but you will not be required to do the written test or the road skills test to exchange your out-of-state license for an Idaho license. However, if your license from the former state expired more than a year prior, you will need to pass the vision test.

I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the Idaho driver’s license?

For one year from the date of your arrival you may drive using a valid foreign driver’s license. It is also encouraged that you hold an International Driving Permit that was issued by your country of residence. However, if you establish residency in Idaho, you are then required to apply for an Idaho driver’s license, which means you will need to pass the vision test, written exam and road skills test.

What documentation do I require for ID driving permit?
