Who needs a driver's license in Iowa?
Anyone who drives a vehicle, motorcycle, or scooter on Iowa's public streets and highways.
What do I need to do to obtain an Iowa driver's license?
Provide documentation of your identity and age.
Provide your Social Security number.
Provide evidence of Iowa residence and home address.
Pass vision, knowledge, and driving examinations.

If you are under age 18, you must also provide:
Proof of accomplishment of a driving training course that has been approved;
An authorized parental/legal guardian consent

Who is exempt from owning an Iowa driver's license?
Anyone utilizing a military motor vehicle of the United States Armed Forces;
Anyone operating agricultural equipment for a distance of slightly more than two miles;
A student or tourist having a valid license from another state or country.
When can I apply for an Iowa driver's license?
At the very least, you need to be sixteen years old. Drivers under the age of 18 are subject to the Graduated Driver's License system.
How can I renew my license in Iowa?
Following the expiration date of an Iowa driver's license, the license is valid for 60 days. A vision test is required to renew your driver's license if it hasn't expired or if there is still time left in the grace period. Passing the vision screening, knowledge test, and driving test are all necessary steps in renewing your driver's license after the grace period.
I changed my address and my old address is reported on my license. What do I have to do?
The Iowa Department of Transportation must be notified within 30 days of any changes.

What is the Iowa Graduated Driver's License system?
Driving privileges for young drivers may be increased via three stages of the Graduated Driver's License (GDL).

When can I apply for an instruction permit in Iowa?
When you become fourteen (14) years old
How can I obtain my IA instruction permit?
Obtain your parent's or legal guardian's written consent.
Perform well in the vision and knowledge tests.
After you have your instruction permit, you must complete an approved driver education course.
How can I practice driving with my instruction permit in Iowa?
Driving must be overseen by a licensed driver, who might be any of the following.
any person who is a parent or legal guardian
a member of the family above the age of 21
a driving instructor
Permission from your parent/legal guardian or a driver over the age of 25

You must have at least 20 hours of supervised driving under your belt before you can take the road test (including at least 2 hours at night).
How can I apply for an intermediate license?
Make sure you're at least 16 years old
For at least a year, keep your teaching permission;
If you haven't had an accident or infraction in six months, you may apply for an intermediate license.
The consent of a parent or legal guardian must be obtained in writing.
Any restrictions when driving with my intermediate license?
Only between the hours of 5 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. are you permitted to drive alone. After 10 hours of driving supervision, including at least two hours at dark, you'll need to pass your road test;
Passengers are restricted to one unrelated minor passenger for the first six months;
The number of passengers may only be as many as the vehicle's seat belts can accommodate.
How can I apply for an Iowa full license?
You must have had your intermediate license for a minimum of a year.
Before you may apply for a full license, you must go 12 months without an accident or an infraction.
Minimum age of majority is 17.
The consent of a parent or legal guardian must be obtained in writing.
Do I have any restrictions with my full license?
No. The terms "under eighteen" or "under 21" will appear on your license depending on your age.

What is on the Iowa knowledge test?
Road signs, Iowa traffic regulations, and safe driving habits are tested in the written exam.
How many questions are there in the Iowa knowledge exam?
There are 35 multiple-choice questions on the exam's 35 pages. To pass the exam, you must get at least 28 questions right.
What do I need to do to pass my driving test?
There must be a comprehensive safety system in the car you give for the test.
The car registration paperwork and proof of liability insurance are both required.
The license plate must have a current registration sticker.
What can I do if I fail my driving test?
For those who need to retake the exam, the examiner will provide instructions on how to do so. Prepare for a retest by working on your skills.
