How do I get driver’s permit in Kentucky?

You will be required to apply for a learner’s permit in Kentucky if you have never had a driver’s license before. To do this, you must pass a written exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.  When you have the learner’s permit, you must then pass a vision test and a road skills test to get your Kentucky intermediate driver’s license.

You must hold a learner’s permit for at a minimum of 180 days, log 60 hours (10 at night) of supervised driving time and complete a New Driver Education program, if you are under the age of 18 years.

How do I prepare for the Kentucky permit test?

Studying for this exam is encouraged so that you can obtain your learner’s permit when you reach the required age. Test your driving knowledge by taking the Kentucky practice test now. Online practice tests are available that provide real sample questions from the DMV exam.

I have recently moved to Kentucky. How do I get the driver’s license?

If you move to Kentucky and you have a license from your former state, you must get a Kentucky driver’s license within 30 days. You will be asked to turn in your out-of-state license, so be sure to take it with you when you go to the DMV.

You must pass the vision screening test to exchange your former license; however, you will not be required to pass a written exam or road skills test.

You must provide a current driving record or a clearance letter from your former state if your license has been expired for a year or more. If you cannot do this, you will be required to pass the vision test and the written test.

If you have a permit from another state you must first transfer your permit and get a Kentucky permit before you will be able to apply for a Kentucky driver’s license.

I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the Kentucky driver’s license?

If you are a non U.S. citizen and your home country is part of the Geneva Compact, you can drive using your valid foreign driver’s license along with an International Permit for up to a year from when you entered the U.S.  You must get a Kentucky driver’s license 30 days after establishing residency in Kentucky if you are a country that is not part of the Geneva Compact.

What documentation do I require for KY driving permit?

What will happen after I pass the permit test?

You will receive the following when you licensing requirements have been met:

  • Restricted Driver’s License (16 years to 17 years of age), which expires 90 days after the 21st birthday.
  • Full Driver’s License (18 years of age and older), which is valid for 4 years.
