Michigan Permit Test FAQs:

How do I get driver’s permit in Michigan?

Applicants under the age of 18 must meet all the requirements of the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program in Michigan to obtain a license. This requires that they pass the state’s written exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.

To apply for the road test, you must hold a Learner’s License at Level 1 for a minimum of 6 months, be at least 16 years of age, log 50 hours (10 at night) of supervised driving training and successfully complete Segment 2 of an approved driver education course. To obtain your Level 2 Intermediate License, you must complete all of the above requirements and then take the vision, written and road tests.

You are not required to take driver education if you are 18 years of age or older; however, you must take the vision, written and road tests.

How do I prepare for the Michigan permit test?

You are encouraged to study for this exam so that you can obtain your learner’s permit as soon as you reach the required age. You can take an online practice exam that provides actual sample questions from the DMV exam. Test your driving knowledge by taking the Michigan practice permit test now.

I have recently moved to Michigan. How do I get the driver’s license?

If you move to Michigan and you have a license from another state, you must get a Michigan license as soon as you establish residence. You will be asked to turn in your out-of-state license, so be sure to take it with you when you go to the DMV.

If you want to change your valid out-of-state or Canadian driver’s license, you will be required to pass the vision test but you will not have to do the written exam or the road skills test. You will only need to do the written exam and driving test if your out-of-state license has been expired for more than 4 years. You will need a Temporary Instruction Permit to take the driving skills test.

I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the Michigan driver’s license?

You will be required to take the vision, written and road tests if you have a foreign license from country other than Germany or Canada.

What documentation do I require for MI driving permit?

Ensure that you have all of the following required documents when you go to the Michigan DMV Office:

  • Michigan ID and Required Documents

What will happen after I pass the permit test?

You will receive the following when you have met the licensing requirements:

  • Restricted Driver’s License (16 to 18 years of age), which is valid for 4 years.
  • Full Driver’s License (18 years of age and older), which is valid for 4 years.

Always remember—to operate a vehicle safely, you must have knowledge, practiced skill and respectfully understand the limitations that can be imposed by the environment as well as other drivers.
