How do I get driver’s permit in New Jersey?

To get a driver’s license in New Jersey, you must be at least 18 years of age. You can get a probationary license at 17 years of age.

You must apply for a New Jersey learner’s permit if you have never had a license before. This is part of the graduated licensing program, which means you must write an exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.

After you have received your learner’s permit, you must pass a vision test and a road test to get your New Jersey driver’s license. If you are under 21 years of age, you must hold the student learner’s permit or an examination permit for a minimum of 6 months before you can take the road test.

How do I prepare for the New Jersey permit test?

You are encouraged to study for this exam so that you can obtain your learner’s permit as soon as you reach the required age. You can take an online practice exam that provides actual sample questions from the DMV exam. Test your driving knowledge by taking the New Jersey practice permit test now.

I have recently moved to New Jersey. How do I get the driver’s license?

If you move to New Jersey, you must obtain a New Jersey license within 60 days of moving or before you current license expires, whichever comes first. If you are under 18 years of age, you cannot transfer an out-of-state license. You will be required to complete the requirements of the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program.

You will be required to turn in your former license so be sure to take it with you when you go to the DMV.

To change an out-of-state, non-provisional license, you will need to pass the vision test; however, you will not be required to pass a written exam or road skills test.  You will be required to take the written test, and possibly the road test, if your out-of-state license is expired.

I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the New Jersey driver’s license?

If you move to New Jersey from another country, you must have temporary visa status in order to apply for a New Jersey driver’s license. You must pass the written knowledge test, the vision test and possibly the road test.

Your presence in the country must be authorized by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and you must provide proof of this. To get your permit, you must bring all the required documents, including your foreign license to pass the 6 point ID verification. You will be subject to GDL Program requirements if you are under the age of 18.

What documentation do I require for NJ driving permit?

Be sure to take all of the following documents when you go to the New Jersey DMV Office:

  • New Jersey ID and Required Documents

You will receive the following when you have met the licensing requirements:

  • Restricted License (17 to 20 years of age), which is valid for 2 years.
  • Full driver’s license (21 and older),which is valid for 4 years.
