This New York DMV practice exam has been updated for 2022 and includes 40 questions from the official 2022 NY Driver Handbook. Anyone 16 or older may take the New York DMV permit exam to get a learner’s permit. You’ll be asked 20 multiple-choice questions on road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving. To pass the DMV knowledge exam, you must properly answer 14 questions, including two out of four on road signs. Retaking the DMV exam is free. How old do I need to be to get a learner permit in New York State?
You must be at least 16 years old in order to apply for a learner's permit in New York.
How old do I need to be to get a driver license in New York State?
To get a New York driver's license, you must be at least 16 years old. One must first get a learner's permit in order to go on. Before taking your road test, you must practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver and complete either a pre-licensing course or a driver education course.
I am less than 16 and have a license from another state. Can I drive in New York State?
No. Even if you hold a valid out-of-state driver's license, you are not allowed to drive in New York if you are under the age of 16.
What do I need to do to apply for a New York State learner permit or driver license?
To get a learner's permit or a driver's license, you must first of all:
Apply for a permit, driver license or non-driver ID card by filling out an application form (MV-44).
Present your Social Security card and any documentation attesting to your identification and birth date.

Can undocumented immigrants apply for a New York State driver's license?
Yes. In order to get a New York State driver's license, those who don't have a Social Security Number might swear or affirm that they don't have one. Other papers, such as a consular identification document, a valid unexpired foreign passport, or a recently issued foreign driver's license with a photograph, are required for all applicants. Additional documents of identification and age may also be accepted by the DMV at the discretion of the agency.
How many questions are on the New York DMV written test?
Only 20 multiple-choice questions are asked on the New York State DMV written exam. To pass, you must get at least 14 out of the possible 16 questions right (or 70 percent of them), including two of the four questions on road signs.
When can I start to learn to drive?

I have a learner permit. Can I drive alone?
No. A licensed driver over the age of 21 must accompany you while you practice driving in the vehicle you are driving. This individual must be a parent, guardian, or teacher in the boroughs of Long Island or New York City.
How many hours do I need to practice driving before taking the NYS road test?
It's recommended that you put in at least 50 hours of supervised practice before taking your road test, with at least 15 of those hours taking place after sundown. At least 10 hours should be spent in traffic that is moderate to heavy.
How do I prepare for the road test?
At the very least, you should put in 50 hours of experience behind the wheel (including 15 hours of night driving). You should practice driving on expressways and other kinds of highways in addition to city streets while preparing for a road test. In addition, a DMV-approved driving school course for high school or college students is highly recommended.
Safe Driving Course Requirement. What is it?
It is necessary to finish an authorized safe driving course before scheduling a road test appointment. Every high school or college driver's education course automatically fulfills this requirement. Most DMV-approved driving schools provide a 5-hour training for non-commercial drivers to fulfill this requirement.
How long is my learner permit valid?
About five years is the lifespan of the learner's permit. It is impossible to know exactly when your learner permit will expire unless you know when you applied for it and when it was issued to you.

How long is my first driver license valid?
Expiry date of learner permit becomes expiration date of driving license after passing road test. A learner's permit and a driver's license are both valid for a maximum of five years.
I have a junior learner permit. When can I take the road test?
Unless you are 17 and have a valid Student Certificate of Completion, your permit must be valid for at least six months before you may take the road test (MV-285).
I am under 18 and hold a learner permit, junior permit or junior driver license from another state. Can I drive in New York State?
Yes, however you must abide by all relevant New York State and state-specific regulations.
I have a junior driver license. When do I become eligible for a senior license?
In order to get a senior driver's license at the age of 17, you must have completed a state-approved high school or college driving education course. Bring your junior license and your instructor's Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) to any DMV office if you want to upgrade to a senior license.

The title certificate confirms who owns a car, whilst the vehicle registration permits it to be operated on public roads and highways.
What documents do I need to bring to the DMV to register a vehicle?
If you want to register a vehicle, you'll need a valid NYS insurance ID card, proof of identification, and a completed Vehicle Registration Application (MV-82). Damage disclosure statements and odometer readings are also necessary.
How old do I need to be to register a vehicle?
You must be 16 years of age or older, and you must produce identification and evidence of date of birth in order to participate. The driver's license, learner's permit, or ID card issued by the state of New York may be used.
What are the main reasons for driver license suspension/revocation?
