North Carolina Permit Test FAQs:

How do I get driver’s permit in North Carolina?

In North Carolina, you must be at least 16 years old to apply for a driver’s license. If you have never had a driver’s license before you must first apply for a learner’s permit which requires that you pass a written test on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.

After you have your learners permit, you must pass a vision screening test and a road skills test in order to receive a NC driver’s license.

You must hold a learner’s permit for a minimum of 12 months before you can take the road skills test, if you are under the age of 18.

How do I prepare for the North Carolina permit test?

You are encouraged to study for this exam so that you can obtain your learner’s permit as soon as you reach the required age. I have recently moved to North Carolina. How do I get the driver’s license?

If you move to North Carolina from another state, you must get a NC driver’s license as soon as you establish residence. You will be asked to turn in your out-of-state license so be sure to take it with you when you go to the DMV.

The road skills test may be waived at the examiner’s discretion; however, you will have to do the vision screening test and the written exam change your former license to a NC driver’s license. You will have to apply for a new license and pass all 3 tests if your out-of-state license has been expired for more than 12 months.

I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the North Carolina driver’s license?

It is not permitted to drive in North Carolina with an International Driver’s License. To legally drive, you must be in possession of a valid license, issued by a government agency, from your home state or country. To qualify for a license, if/when you become a resident of North Carolina, you must pass the vision screening, traffic signs recognition test, written knowledge test and, if the examiner thinks it’s necessary, the road skills test.

What documentation do I require for NC driving permit?

Ensure that you have all the following documents with you when you go to the North Carolina DMV Office:

  • North Carolina ID and Required Documents

You will receive the following when you have met the licensing requirements:

  • Intermediate Driver’s License (16 to 20 years of age), which is valid up to 8 years.
  • Full driver’s license (21 and older), which is valid up to 8 years.

Always remember—to operate a vehicle safely, you must have knowledge, practiced skill and respectfully understand the limitations that can be imposed by the environment as well as other drivers.
