How do I get driver’s permit in Texas?

To apply for a driver’s license in Texas, you must be a minimum of 16 years old. If you have never had a driver’s license before, you must apply for a Texas learner’s permit. To do this you must pass a vision test as well as a written exam on safe driving techniques, traffic signs and motor vehicle laws.

After you get the learner’s permit, you will have to pass a road skills test to get a Texas driver’s license.

If you are under the age of 18, before taking the road skills test, you will have to prove that you have competed and passed an approved driver education course and hold a learner’s permit for a minimum of 6 months. If you are between 18 and 24 years of age, you must prove that you have completed an Adult Driver Education program.

How do I prepare for the Texas permit test?

You will be required to pass the vision screen to change your former license but you will not have to do the written or road skills tests. I am from the overseas. Do I have to apply for the Texas driver’s license?

If you are a visitor to Texas from another country, you may drive with your foreign license for up to a year. If you have a license from Germany, France or Canada and you want to apply for a Texas license, you will not have to do the written or driving skills tests. You will be required to do the written and driving skills tests if you are from any other country. Every applicant will have to do the vision screening.
