If you get a traffic citation while driving in Connecticut or New Jersey,
- you may return to New York State and answer the citation later.
- your vehicle may be impounded until you answer the citation.
- your license may be confiscated until you answer the citation.
New York State is a member of the Non-Resident Violator Compact. If you get a traffic citation in another member state, you may return to New York State without posting bail and deal with the citation later. However, if you fail to answer the out-of-state citation, New York State may suspend your driver license until you do answer it. Washington, DC and all US states except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, and Wisconsin are members of the Non-Resident Violator Compact. ,
